To properly manage
your land, detailed knowledge of the timber on your property is
needed. This is accomplished by cruising the property. This gives us
knowledge about the type of timber, the volumes present, and its
value. Once this information is available, the Landowner can make
educated decisions, as to the harvesting and reforestation of the
timber on his land.
If the timber is
young and growing well, it may need to be thinned. If the timber is
mature, not well stocked, or has an insect or disease problem, it
may be time to harvest and reforest the site.
REFORESTATION
Reforestation
starts with proper planning of the Timber Sale. Insuring that the
Timber Sale is laid out in a way that makes it feasible to reforest,
and that the Best Management Practices are met, will make
reforestation simpler and better results will be achieved.
Considerations when
reforesting:
-
Mechanical or
Chemical Site Preparation. In most cases Chemical Site Preparation
is more cost effective and gives better Hardwood control,
resulting in better growth.
-
Aerial or ground
application of herbicides.
-
Herbicides to be
used and timing.
-
Origin of
seedlings.
-
Hand or machine
planting.
-
Spacing and
number of trees per acre.
RELEASE
In many cases, Pine
stands will benefit from a Hardwood release. This involves applying
the proper herbicides to control the unwanted competition. This will
release the Pines and enable them to add increased growth.
FERTILIZATION
Millions of acres
of Forest land have been fertilized in the South with very positive
results. The gains achieved have added extra profit for the
landowners through increases in growth.
Buckhead Forestry
can handle the complete Reforestation, Release or Fertilization job
for you. The end results of these activities will be a new, better
growing Forest for the future.
